The Family Friendly Choices for OC’s Children, Moms & Dads

Reader's Choice Pic

For the 9th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, we wanted to get even more local choices for the annual awards so we asked our readers to select two winners for each category—one in North OC and one in South OC.

You were more than happy to meet our request. Along with expanding the number of categories from 56 in 2010 to 78 in 2011, dividing the county almost tripled the number of places that we awarded, and brought several new places to the list. Seascape Kids Fun, an entertainment center in Anaheim that opened last year, took home the award in four categories. New categories like Favorite Moms Boutique, Best Candy Store and Best Gymnastics Class also broadened our winners pool. In some cases, everyone agreed and we named a county-wide favorite.

Despite it all, our readers still found a way to show their loyalty, as one-third of the winners this year have been the favorites in their respective categories for many years in a row.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2011 Readers’ Choice Awards, and a special thank you to everyone who voted!

FAMILY FAVORTIES

BEST BEACH

Laguna Beach Most people approach Laguna from either the 5 or 405, heading into its quaint downtown via Laguna Canyon Road, which is often congested on summer weekends. The real trick is to come from the North. Cruising down the PCH, through gorgeous Crystal Cove State Park, sparkling blue Pacific on your right, multi-million dollar homes and open hills on your left, is the ultimate coastal drive—anywhere. You swoop around El Moro Cove, now fully accessible as part of the state beach, and you come upon our county’s slice of heaven. Pick your favorite secluded cove beach (try Crescent Bay in North Laguna, which has bathrooms and showers and a ramp for easy stroller access), or hit the action at Main Beach. Either way, the beach will be stunning (and clean!) and your day will be well spent. www.LagunaBeachinfo.com. —RM

Huntington Beach

BEST BEACH, NORTH COUNTY/BEST PLACE TO FLY A KITE

Surf City USA offers four beaches in one. Huntington City Beach, Bolsa Chica State Beach, Huntington State Beach and the Dog Beach stretch over 8 miles—the longest expanse of continuous beachfront on the West Coast. The sandy expanse is safe and clean, the ideal destination for kite flying or surf-loving families. In Huntington Beach, the art and practice of flying a kite is still alive and soaring, and readers appreciate that, voting HB the winner in this category for the fifth year in a row. Kite Store, one of the few kites shops in the United Sates, is located here along with a professional kite flying show to entice little ones and parents alike. And whether you have a dog or not, be sure to stop by the dog beach. Bordered by rock piles, this stretch allows dogs the freedom to run safely. www.huntingtonbeach.com.—KH

BEST LAKE FOR FISHING

Irvine Lake Only a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Orange County’s freeways and metropolitan expanse is the Irvine Lake, our readers’ choice for fishing for the fifth year in a row. These 750 acres of land offer fishing, camping and hiking for families who want to get away. Parents with children 12 and under can fish in the Kids’ Lagoon, where 1 to 3-pound catfish have been plentiful this summer. While a fishing license is required for the general fishing, the Kids’ Lagoon is meant to provide an opportunity for children to learn the needed skills first. Irvine Lake gives kids a chance to practice before joining the big fish. Santiago Canyon Road (near Foothill Toll Road). 714-649-9111. www.irvinelake.net. —KH

BEST HISTORICAL SITE

Reader's Choice Pic

Mission San Juan Capistrano For the sixth year in a row, readers have recognized the history at Mission San Juan Capistrano as their favorite. The 200-year-old monument offers daily events and activities to educate visitors about its historical, cultural and religious significance. On Friday, September 16, visit the Mission for the Romance of the Mission Benefit Gala Concert and Dinner, featuring a pre-show reception, entertainment in the Great Church and a romantic dinner setting. Also going on through the end of September is the Historical Collection Revealed Exhibit, which features historic artifacts from the Mission’s past that have not been seen in decades if ever. 26801 Ortega Highway, San Juan Capistrano. 949-234-1300. www.missionsjc.com. —KH

BEST HIKING TRAIL

Crystal Cove State Park

In a place blessed with beautiful vistas and weather that allows for year-round outdoor pursuits, Orange Countyians have a variety of locations to choose from when we want to commune with nature. While most every city has some open space to call its own, the stretch of land, approximately 2,400 acres, between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach, some going inland into wild canyons, was donated by the Irvine Company to the people of this state, and is maintained as Crystal Cove State Park. Back country hikes abound, but most are not easy or child-friendly. However, if you stay on the ocean-side of the park (Park at Reef Point) there is a paved trail that spans the 3 miles of coastal bluffs, allowing for a great place to walk or run with a stroller, try out your bikes or rollerblades and just stroll for a bit, letting the kids enjoy looking for bunnies and lizards and the occasional pod of dolphins or whales putting on a show just offshore. Just opened this summer is the new 60-site camping area at the former El Moro trailer park on the park’s southern end. Parking “day use” fee: $15; Annual Pass: $125. Camping reservations: 1-800-444-7275. www.CrystalCoveStatePark.com. —RM

The Market offers fresh produce and baked breads, flowers, vendors, live entertainment and an outdoor beer garden. SOUTH COUNTY: Great Park The iconic orange balloon, 400 feet high, comes to mind for most when thinking of the Great Park in Irvine but the local famers market is becoming a draw on its own. Fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables along with homemade breads and baked goods bring visitors and foodies alike to the park each Sunday—rain or shine—from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Besides the food and artisan products for purchase, guests can enjoy musical performances and poetry readings and kids are invited to participate in the weekly book reading by a selected Irvine Public School on the grass. Sand Canyon and Marine Way, Irvine. 866-829-3829. www.ocgp.org. —KH

BEST BIKE TRAIL

NORTH COUNTY: Santa Ana River Trail This 110-mile trail, spanning from the San Bernardino Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, is still a project in the works. What is completed, though, has bikers begging for more. The asphalt-paved bike paths are off-route and designed for both commuter and recreational bicyclists. The paths connect neighborhoods and schools and span the distance between 14 incorporated cities and across three counties. The trail is 12-feet wide, allowing riders to cycle abreast, a safer and more comfortable approach for parents with small children. santaanarivertrail.org. —KH

SOUTH COUNTY: Whiting Ranch Whiting Ranch shows that Orange County has more to offer than track housing and department stores. Full of riparian and oak woodland canyons, rolling grassland hills and steep slopes of coastal sage scrub, the variety of terrain is perfect for keeping bike rides interesting. The park has several trails, most spanning between 6 and 8 miles. As you cycle along, be prepared to “ooh” and “aw” right along with your kids, moving from overgrown leafy draperies to sand and cacti within the same mile. There is a fee to gain entrance to the park, but last month the price of an annual pass to the OC Parks was reduced by 50 percent. Now a combination pass is just $40, allowing unlimited access to all county, regional, wilderness and costal facilities. 949-923-2245. www.ocparks.com/whitingranch. —KH

BEST ENTERTAINMENT CENTER

Boomers Fun for all ages abounds at Boomers, the readers’ choice for best entertainment center for the fourth year in a row. Kids can race Go Karts, practice their drive on the Mini Golf Course or cruise through the arcade, all at a pay-as-you-go price. A “no entrance fee” keeps Boomers a budget-friendly location. Boomers also rewards kids for keeping up with their studies: A recent report card with A’s and B’s earns free tokens, giving students the extra incentive to do well in school. Locations throughout OC. www.boomersparks.com. —KH

BEST FAIR

OC Fair Come on, admit it: one of the best things about summer in the OC is the Fair. Yeah, it is crowded. Yeah, it is hot. But where else can you watch a demolition derby or rodeo, check out ice sculptures, meet a celebrity chef or two, ride a roller coaster, pet baby farm animals, see “best in show” goats, chickens and pigs and get up close and personal with people from every walk of life all while eating fried food on a stick (try the jumbo corn dogs—trust us!). Don’t forget the evening concerts in the outdoor amphitheater featuring major acts (concert tickets allow same day admission to the fair). And Centennial Farm. And the shopping. And the entertainers...hypnotists, magicians, musicians, the list goes on. Coming around mid-July though mid-August each year, the OC Fair delivers. It’s a tradition. It will be back. Don’t miss it. 88 Fair Dr., Costa Mesa. 714-708-1500. www.OCFair.com. —RM

BEST THEME PARK

Reader's Choice Pic

Disneyland Big or small, Disneyland continues to capture the hearts of visitors from all over the world. One step onto the property and it’s not hard to see why. The Magic Kingdom brings back that youthful exuberance, and even if you just walk down Main Street to get a caramel apple, you can’t leave without a smile on your face. New to Walt’s kingdom this year is Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, an underwater attraction based on “The Little Mermaid.” One-day tickets can be purchased or guests can take advantage of annual pass deals for Southern California residents. 1313 Harbor Blvd, Anaheim. 714-781-4000. www.disneyland.com. —KH

SOUTH COUNTY: Edwards Irvine Spectrum 21 & IMAX In some cases, bigger really is better, and a movie screen is one such instance. Superheroes and epic car chases should not be confined to the 20 X 10 box you call a home screen. And if you’re gonna go big, why not consider a screen that’s eight stories tall? At Edwards Irvine, the IMAX screen towers in front of you and is about the height of an office building, putting viewers into the world of the characters they are watching. Add recently updated surround sound, stadium seating and the only IMAX in the OC/LA area with free parking and you have our readers’ choice for South County’s best movie theater. 71 Fortune Drive, Irvine. 949-450-4920. www.shopirvinespectrumcenter.com. —KH

BEST DAY TRIP DESTINATION

San Diego The city to our south is a family-friendly destination that’s easy to get to and offers a huge variety of kid-friendly outings, no matter what your budget. Try leaving the car at home and taking the train for a relaxing cruise down the coast. Then board San Diego’s visitor-friendly trolley system. Head to PetCo Park for a Padres game or head over to Balboa Park and visit one of the 15 world-class museums there. The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the San Diego Model Railroad Museum are especially child-friendly or you can take a ride on Balboa Park’s 101-year-old carousel. Next, hit the waterfront and visit the Maritime Museum of San Diego and board the tall ships “Star of India” and “Californian,” or step onto a real-life submarine. Maybe the world-famous San Diego Zoo (also in Balboa Park) or SeaWorld San Diego is on your day’s agenda. Don’t forget to visit Old Town.

San Diego for an admittedly touristy, but fun, look into San Diego’s history.  People from around the world travel to San Diego for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, and you only have to drive down the 5 for an hour to experience it. www.SanDiego.org. —RM

BEST FAMILY LUNCH RESTAURANT / BEST FAMILY DINNER RESTAURANT, SOUTH COUNTY

Ruby's Every year I ask my daughters, now 7 and 9, what they want for their special birthday meal. The answer is always the same: Ruby’s. This is one child-friendly restaurant. Brightly lit, with retro decorations—we’re particular to the vintage cars at the South Laguna location and the boat models in Irvine—Ruby’s is made with kids in mind. The kids’ meals offer healthy options like fruit instead of fries, or chicken and broccoli as a main dish, along the beloved burgers and mac ‘n cheese. The reward for a clean plate? The world’s smallest, cutest soft-serve cone. And they don’t just give out crayons here—each child is handed a small project—usually a vehicle of some sort that must be folded into shape. The genius of this is that both child and parent are kept busy until the food arrives, preventing the parent-dreaded “wait tantrum.” Locations throughout OC. www.Rubys.com. —RM

BEST GROCERY STORE

Trader Joe’s OK, we get it. Organic is good. Preservatives are bad. We need to eat fresh and local. But we need to stay on a budget and find foods that the kids will eat. So where can we shop? Thankfully, Orange County is busting at the seams with Trader Joe’s stores. This Southern Californian original (the first store opened in 1967 in Pasadena) is on target or ahead of all food trends. Their cookies, crackers, chips and granola bars don’t have preservatives or hydrogenated oils. Apple sauce is sweetened without sugar. Yogurts in tubes don’t have artificial food colorings or added hormones (and that goes for all of TJ’s dairy products).  TJ’s has all of these lunch box staples and much, much more and they’re all tasty, kid-friendly and better for you than the “regular” supermarket. Don’t forget the yummy sample bar that helps busy moms spice up the dinner rotation. Top this off with reasonable prices and friendly staffers. Why shop anywhere else? For Dads

BEST HARDWARE STORE

Home Depot OC Dads have spoken: Home Depot is the county’s best hardware store. Shoppers can find everything for home improvement from tools and appliances to garden plants and storage options. The paint-splattered and dust-covered orange aprons worn by the staff let you know that the employee helping you load the lumber onto your cart knows a thing or two about the options available. With a price match guarantee, customers can feel confident that Home Depot is offering the best deal to get the job done. Locations throughout OC. www.HomeDepot.com. —KH

ESPN Zone The couch and the tube just don’t cut it for the big game compared to a sports bar. When OC Dads are looking for a place to catch their favorite team, ESPN Zone offers them what they are looking for. A TV visible from every spot at the table, well-priced quality food and a first class selection of draft and bottled beers keep sports enthusiasts happy whether their team is winning or losing. Anaheim Angels For the second year in a row, OC Dads stay loyal to the Angels as their favorite sports team. Win or lose, an afternoon at the baseball park is a great way to hang out with friends (or family) and kick back with some peanuts and a hot dog. This year the Angel’s celebrate their 50th Anniversary. The 12-month celebration and the 2011 season is themed “More Than ‘A’ Season”, and the event honors the fans and the Angels’ great moments of the past. 2000 E. BEST MEN’S HAIR SALON/BARBER SHOP

Sports Clips This is definitely a place for the dudes! From the decorations to the referee-striped shirts the hair dressers wear, the sports-themed environment is evident from the moment you walk in. Since your man probably isn’t interested in a soothing scalp massage, a seaweed facial or a price tag that enters the triple-digits, a hair cut at a high end salon would be a waste, and Sports Clips caters to this demographic. They offer quality hair cuts without a hassle, and the environment is perfect for some father-son bonding. Locations throughout OC. www.sportsclips.com. —KH
