Chic Children’s Rooms

Create a space that is personal, versatile and stylish for you and your child

Though often tucked away beyond the dining and living areas, children’s rooms are a fundamental part of a home and a childhood. These rooms are where memories are made alongside siblings, cousins and playmates, where babies grow into kindergarteners, then middle schoolers and then teenagers, where children become who they are.

As such, they deserve the attention to details and design that are given to entryways, family rooms and other heavy living areas, explained interior designer Hillary Nichols, owner of Orange County-based Hillary Nichols Interiors. She adds that children’s spaces should reflect the personality of both your little one and you.

“After all, parents are in children’s rooms a lot,” she said.

But where to start?

Try repurposing a piece of furniture you already have — perhaps something that’s been passed down from your own childhood or even a funky thrift store find you haven’t yet known what to do with and build the room around that.

“Old is new right now,” said Nichols. “We’re seeing the recycling of lines, influences, ideas and patterns and the mixing of modern elements with vintage pieces, like modern hardware on vintage dressers. Repurposing is hot.” Another hot design staple when it comes to children’s rooms this year? Deep, rich emerald green, says Nichols.

Whether your child is on the way or on the way to high school, Nichols and fellow Orange County interior designer Megan Crane share design trends and tips that will give your child an inspired and original space that even you love spending time in.
