We are now in the second half of 2012. As we enter July, and the annual celebration of our country’s independence is upon us, I think it serves as a reminder to elaborate on the importance of a parent’s independence. So I ask you, What is it that makes you feel independent?
As a parent overwhelmed with responsibilities and to-do lists, it can be easy to lose sight of your own wants and needs. When managing your time, it can seem impossible to squeeze in some ‘me time’. Remember that in order to better serve those around you, you must first serve yourself. So find a few minutes each day to indulge in your favorite activities.
Meeting up with a friend for coffee, taking the dog on a leisurely walk and making use of your green thumb are great ways to escape from the pressures of work and the household.
Check out the feature that Madeline and I wrote on page 24, “Not Your Mom’s Workout,” where we explore the latest fitness crazes rising in popularity among moms in OC. Trying one of these workouts will allow you to reclaim your independence while burning calories, making new friends, clearing your mind and most importantly having fun!
The beaches and parks of OC are perfect places to kick back, relax and get your Fourth on! Be sure to flip to our calendar on page 68, to find a list of Rebecca’s picks for the best local patriotic celebrations, some of which include annual community traditions, and some are new to Orange County this year.
Lastly, this month we feature our semi-annual Private School Directory. Finding the right fit for your child can be a challenging task if you are considering the private school path. Using our 2012 Fall Education Directory, which includes tuition, student-teacher ratios and contact information, you will be able to narrow down your private school options.
However tuition prices and ratios aren’t the only thing to consider when picking a private school. In addition to our Private School Guide, we included advice from OC private schools directors and principals who have provided us with their expertise to help point you, as the parent, in the right direction.
Enough about school, there’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy! And as we gather on the Fourth to show how much we value our independence as a country, I’d like to leave you with this…
What makes you independent? What ignites your spirit?
Read a book, go for a walk, play a round of golf, watch a movie, redecorate the house, take a nap, have a glass of wine, sit on the sand at one of our beautiful local beaches and watch the sunset. Do something you love, de-stress and relax. Not only is it okay at regular intervals to reclaim your independence—it’s essential.
Until next time…
