Going Big in Long Beach
The RMS Queen Mary isn’t the only reason to make Long Beach your next weekend getaway.

They say everything is big in Texas: the 10-gallon hats, the long horns of the cattle, the Houston skyscrapers, the hair. Well, in Long Beach, everything is big too. In the bustling harbor, massive trade ships share the water with migrating whales and sandy beaches stretch for 5.5 miles. In fact, if Long Beach doesn’t have the biggest this or that, it has the second biggest. LA county’s second largest city — at nearly a half million population — it is also the second largest container port in the nation. Its Aquarium of the Pacific, with 1.5 million visitors a year, is the second largest aquarium in California (after Monterey Bay) and the iconic RMS Queen Mary is the second largest ship named Queen Mary (the QM2, which entered service in 2009, is the largest ocean liner ever built).
