Wigging Out
Helping children with hair loss live normal lives
![]() |
According to the American Hair Loss Association, children’s hair loss is responsible for three percent of the nation’s pediatric office visits and comes from a variety of reasons that range from ringworm, alopecia, different types of physical and mental trauma and chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Though usually, with treatments and patience, hair will grow back, it’s the time in between that affects most kids who are subjected to teasing, bullying and lowered self esteem. To remedy this, many parents go out to look for wigs. However, selecting a wig that is versatile and natural can be a challenge. Follea, a local company that specializes in European hair wigs, is working to help children find natural looking wigs to help boost their self esteem. “Nothing can be more hurtful to a child than to experience bullying or even accidental bullying due to hair loss at a very young age,” said Holly Slear, technical expert and educator at Follea. She added, “The best way to help these children from being ridiculed for their hair loss is to find a wig that looks natural and fits the child’s lifestyle.”
