Free Back-to-School Whooping Cough Shot at Parenting & Kids Expo

ORANGE, CA—Free whooping cough booster shots will be provided at the Parenting & Kids Expo to fulfill the school requirement for 7th through 12th graders. Courtesy of the Orange County Chapter of the AAP, the Orange County Health Care Agency, the Orange County Department of Education and the UC Irvine Family Health Center Mobile Clinic, shots will be given to the first 500 children at the event.

To receive the vaccine, all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and must provide an immunization record (a yellow card). The booster shot will be administered by medical professionals from the UC Irvine Family Health Center Mobile Clinic.

With several recent outbreaks of pertussis in the past two years and approximately 5,000 California residents diagnosed with the disease in 2010, last summer former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law the requirement that students entering grades 7 through 12 in fall 2011 must receive an adolescent whooping cough booster shot (known as Tdap). Children who do not provide proof of immunization to their school within the first 30 days of class will not be able to attend, and some schools require proof of immunization by the first day with no 30-day grace period. Currently, 179,000 OC students still require this vaccine.

Tdap protects against pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus and diphtheria. By immunizing school-aged children, parents protect their children and the greater community from whooping cough, which is a highly contagious disease that causes coughing fits spanning several months in duration. Children and infants are the most commonly affected. In 2010, the California outbreak of whooping cough resulted in 10 infant deaths.

The Parenting & Kids Expo is a free event offering entertainment and fun for the whole family with a Back-to-School fashion show, live performances and over 60 exhibitors. It will take place at the District in Tustin on Saturday, August 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parenting & Kids Expo Returns to the District in Tustin

ORANGE, CA—Parenting OC Magazine’s 7th annual Parenting & Kids Expo will return to the District at Tustin Legacy in Tustin on Saturday, August 6th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event offers entertainment and fun for the whole family with a Back-to-School fashion show, live performances and over 60 exhibitors.

Sponsored by PBS SoCal and Playlist 92.7, the Expo brings the best of summer fun to one place. Drawing attention at the center of the event is line up of live entertainment featuring some of the southland’s up-and-coming musical talents. Headlining is WhipLash kids band, along with students from Virtuoso Music, Ricky Simms and solo performances from local singers Ashley Plohr and Adiell Edwardo Vazquez.

Kicking off the Expo and the stage entertainment will be the annual Back-to-School fashion show. Local OC models will strut their stuff, showing the trendiest items for kids to sport in the classroom this coming fall. Local boutique designers such as Auntie Kerrie’s and Saige Nicole’s will be featured along with larger brands like Crocs and Shawn White for Target.

Expo exhibitors will be presenting information for parents on OC-based schools, activities and health options. Previous exhibitors have included the Boy Scouts of America, KOCE, College Nannies & Tutors, Go Girl Energy Drink and several OC Schools and District shopping center restaurants.

Parents can also enter their kids in the Cute Kid Cover Contest for a mini photo shoot at the event, and a chance to appear on the cover of an upcoming issue of Parenting OC Magazine, which reaches more than 270,000 OC parents. The winner will also receive 100 zed cards (aka comp cards) for modeling agencies and casting calls. All participants in the contest will also receive a free keepsake cover with their child’s photo on a mock cover of Parenting OC Magazine.
