Recently, I was on a girl’s overnight trip in San Diego and brought along my skincare essentials to make sure I do not skip a beat with keeping up my routine while out of town. As I began setting out my products, a friend said “I use Irish Spring to cleanse my face and don’t really use any skincare.”
I almost fainted on the spot and had an immediate skincare
intervention! Skincare is the fountain of
youth and I will share some tips and tricks I shared with my friend that will
make a world of difference in the overall appearance of your skin.
Tip#1 Wash Make-Up Off Every Evening
It is an absolute must to wash your make-up off every
evening. I know it’s the last thing we
want to do after a long day of work and errands, but it is a must. It is a little known fact that if you do not
cleanse your face every night, it can age you up to 30 days! I have told this to many of my clients and this
fact alone has changed their evening skincare routine. The reason is simple. The process of cell renewal switches on at
night. This is the optimal time for skin
creams and serums to work its magic and rejuvenate your skin. I load up on facial cleasing wipes as a quick
and easy way to remove make-up.
Tip #2 Exfoliate
Your skin needs time
to regenerate its topmost layer, which exfoliation strips away. People with dry
skin should only exfoliate once or twice a week, while those with oily skin can
exfoliate two to four times a week. Remember to moisturize your skin after
exfoliating, to soothe it and keep it from drying out. Don’t ignore your décolleté (neck &
chest) area as this area is often ignored, but is a tell take sign of age. My favorite exfoliant is Murad’s AHA/BHA
Exfoliating Cleanser. I am a big fan of
double duty products and I can use this product as a body exfoliant as well as to
smooth out heels and elbows.
Tip #3 Use a Face
Mask
We are all on a time
crunch and may not always make it to our recommended facial every month. A great alternative is to use a facial mask
once or twice a week at home. Not only will your skin feel smoother and healthier,
but you'll also enjoy the therapeutic benefits of regular pampering. Even if you have a busy schedule, spoil
yourself - and do right by your skin - with your favorite store-bought or
homemade facial mask. It’s a
great idea to use masks geared toward specific skin concerns you are
treating. For example, if acne is a
concern, DDF Sulfer Mask is a great for oil absorption and can even be used as
a spot treatment in the evening to dry out a blemish. Murad makes an amazing Pomegranate Exfoliating
Mask that dissolves dull, dry skin to keep skin looking fresh and clear while
restoring smoothness and brightness. A
great trick is to use a mask while you are showering. It saves time and the steam does wonders for
your mask.
